Muskox horn, fish hook, thread, brass
6″ x 1″ x 48″ (15 x 3 x 122cm)
This work emerged out of seeing nuts used on fishing hooks as weights up north. These were used when trying to snag fish with a hook, rather than attracting the fish with a lure. This seemed like a significant shift from traditional views on fishing. This work is perhaps a way to bridge the gap between the carefully carved lures of the past, and the present day use of nuts used as weights. I have carved two nuts from muskox horn. This imbues the nuts with a value beyond their form. There is their material value, with its cultural associations, and the value in- stilled in an object that has been carefully and precisely rendered.
