The likeness of a walrus skull references the historic use of the ivory as a material widely used to create hunting and fishing implements, and later as a raw material used to produce carvings for trade. Using it here, cast in an alternate material of value, allows me to reference traditional materials which I rarely have access to, while exploring new ways of making. The skull was 3D printed in wax, then investment cast in silver. The material, and scale of the skull turns it into a precious, delicate object, which are unexpected qualities considering the imagined use as a fishing lure.
