Jeneen Frei Njootli (Vuntut Gwitchin)

 

 

Jeneen Frei Njootli produces mixed media, audio, performance and installation works in addition to working on community-based projects. A member of the Vuntut Gwitchin Nation in northern Yukon, Njootli holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She earned her MFA from the University of British Columbia in 2017. Her work as a contemporary Indigenous artist has been recognized throughout Canada. She is a core member of the ReMatriate collective and currently sits on the Board of Directors of grunt gallery. In 2017, Njootli was longlisted as a nominee for the Sobey Art Award and shortlisted for the Contemporary Art Society Vancouver Artist Prize. In 2016, she won the William and Meredith Saunderson Prize for Emerging Artists. She has completed multiple residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and her work is in the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection. Jeneen Frei Njootli is currently a grateful, uninvited guest on unceded Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam, Skwxwu7mesh territories.
