COUZYN VAN HEUVELEN AND MARK PRESTON – February 8th
Mark Preston & Couzyn van Heuvelen: Great North
OPENING RECEPTION: Wednesday, Feb. 8th, 5-8 PM
Both artists are from the North; Preston is of Tlingit ancestry and van Heuvelen is inuk. They are both rooted in their respective histories and traditions, but stray from those methods in unique and fascinating ways. This show aims to examine their perspective voices as artists contributing to the Canadian cultural landscape.
Through Preston’s exploration of traditional Northwest coast formline shapes, he has created a series of sculptural works in the form of unconventional, minimalist cedar panels and masks.
Van Heuvelen’s work explores Inuit culture and identity, new and old technologies, and personal narratives. He strays from established Inuit art making methods and explores a range of fabrication processes through his work. Couzyn holds a BFA from York University and an MFA from NSCAD University.
Mark Preston lives and works in Whitehorse, Yukon. Couzyn van Heuvelen was born in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and now lives in Southern Ontario.
