Marcy Friesen (Swampy Cree, Welsh)
Epson Premium Luster
30″ x 20″
Marcy Friesen created this powerful portrait as a response to the hundreds of unmarked graves recently unearthed at residential schools around Canada. Using an entire high-quality coyote pelt, Friesen is summoning the bravery, strength, and cunning that coyotes are known for. The multiple shades of brown beads represent the vast number of Indigenous people affected by residential schools. Orange has come to symbolize how the residential school system stripped its students of their Indigenous identities, referenced here by the beaded flowers on the artist’s cheeks.
