“Transformation is at the core of Coast Salish cosmology. Two Salmon transforming into humans, frogs, and water are depicted in the dark navy positive space of the design. The crescents rippling from the salmon gills are water. Through the Northwest Coast design device of visual punning, humans and frogs are also suggested through the two salmon faces joining at the center of the design. The process of transformation is represented by the very subtle and almost imperceivable gradation between black and dark navy in the design.” – lessLIE
