Pillar Rock is a volcanic formation on the beach of Haida Gwaii, which is a prominent landmark tied to his Haida roots. Bennett’s self-portraits are easily identified because he always shows a mole on one of his cheeks. The figure itself is similar to an image that might be seen on a Bentwood Box, or box of treasure. This representation is his way of encapsulating the image of his homeland as a treasure.
