Traditionally, Haida moons were portrayed as female, with labrets to illustrate their gender. I wanted to create a moon with a face that had feminine qualities alone. The original Moon mask was carved from yellow cedar and was my first attempt in carving a mask. I chose to create a mold and cast the mask in white resin because I wanted to give it a modern and clean lined appearance, it also made for a lighter outcome to mount my frame to. I painted my Raven Crest in the background by using parts of the Raven elements to keep the modern feel as well as the traditional aspect intact.
