Beau Dick: Devoured by Consumerism
March 15 - May 4, 2019
White Columns Gallery, 91 Horatio St, New York, NY
White Columns Gallery will be hosting Beau Dick: Devoured by Consumerism in New York City, in collaboration with Fazakas Gallery. Devoured by Consumerism is the last exhibition that Beau conceived before his passing in 2017. By sharing works inspired by the Kwakwaka'wakw Winter Ceremonies, Beau hoped to spark change in a world he saw devouring itself under the ravenous pressures of capitalism.
The exhibition features a host of compelling masks and sculptures made between 1990 and 2017, such as supernatural cannibal birds, shape-shifter Otter Woman, Bookwus, and Tsonoqua. Through these works, Beau argues that his culture's stories and practices contain profound teachings about balance, community responsibility, and personal transformation.
The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication, produced in collaboration with Figure 1. Publishing. Full colour photographs of Beau's works are supported by contextual information and insights from his apprentices and friends, Wayne Alfred, Cole Speck and Alan Hunt. Essays by LaTiesha Fazakas, John Cussans and Candice Hopkins examine the continued impact of Beau's art and life.
