Story is a fitting title for our first exhibition as it showcases our story. This road to this exhibition started with many questions. How does a work of art remain unique when it is inseparable from the context of its history and culture? Northwest Coast Native Art has always been pigeonholed and largely separated from what is considered the “contemporary art world”, but does it deserve to be confined to this space? Is there a way to reconcile these divided parts?
The pieces in our exhibition all have one thing connecting them, and that is their own Story. Each work communicates its own narrative which is why the pieces work together in a shared space despite the diversity of their cultural backgrounds. Each work’s Story is inseparable from the work itself. This was the crux of Story – opening up and embracing new ideas, works, and concepts about art through storytelling.
