Corey Bulpitt Haida, b. 1978
26.7 x 18.4 x 15.2 cm
British rapper Daniel Dumile was more commonly known by his alter ego MF DOOM; a stage name inspired by the Fantastic Four’s masked arch enemy Dr Doom. Here, Bulpitt’s use of bright colour, angular features, and abalone inlay, renders MF DOOM’s iconic mask Haida. As an exploration of the direct influence of hip hop in his own work, Bulpitt tackles the diverse subject matter while maintaining the Northwest Coast value of communicating narrative through mask-making—defining his innovative style of translating the iconic hip hop reference through each cut incised by his carving tools.
