Artist statement: I like to challenge the surfaces that I paint on, in turn critiquing or considering the Euro art historical canon which can be non inclusive. I think of materials that are signifiers to place. My kokom had so many cast iron pans, so does my mom, and now so do I. The quality of the pans are top notch and they can endure flame or fire. On this pan is a painting of my moshom wearing a flannel cap. A portrait painting, he's with the cast iron. Cast iron is known for its longevity and durability which speaks to my family and us as Native people.
