Often, we have to simplify our identity to connect. We don the mask most appropriate for the situation, which often betrays other aspects of us. We do our best to cover, to stay complete, but we are complex. Our complexity is too often categorized and moralized in ways that don’t align with the nature of who we are. In knowing ourselves more completely, there is often an unraveling, a peeling back, and a disintegration of old masks.
Heavy Heart//Beautiful Mask is a block printed skull, the structure of a face, partially obscured by crude decoration, smeared skin-colored paint, and the edge of the paper. The space the beautiful girl occupies is flat, but adorned with formline designs that lack proper gravity.
