The painting Umpehdu weeunpe dooweh eyeh / He who paints the day (Thunderbird) is a key work in the ᓭᓭᓯᐤ / Sêsêsiw / Yellow Legs series. It is titled to honour part of the process and space of engagement with the initial intended audience in Regina, SK. The artwork was created in conversation with two local community leaders, Paulette and Marcella Poitras, Indigenous knowledge keepers and storytellers. Paulette Poitras, who is Dakota/Cree, initially adopted Jason Baerg into the Dakota nation and honoured him with the Dakota name Umpehdu weeunpe dooweh eyeh / He who paints the day. The configuration represents Morning Star (Venus) and the Thunderbird, concurrently honouring Baerg’s Cree name, Mihko-Pihêsiw Napîw / Red Thunderbird.
