Matthew Provost Naatsikapamatoosin (Two Smudge) Piikani, b. 1995

Working from vintage county and regional maps, Matthew Provost Natsikapamatoosin reclaims cartographic systems through Blackfoot language, memory, and design. Together, these three works trace a personal geography across Blackfoot territory: Fort Macleod, where the artist was born; Lethbridge, where he grew up; and Mohkinitsi, the Blackfoot name connected to Calgary’s Elbow River.
Though originally created as tools of division and administration, the maps are transformed through layered Blackfoot imagery and references to the night sky. An abstracted Milky Way moves across the compositions, connecting the works through a shared celestial presence and suggesting continuity beyond imposed borders. As a triptych, the works speak to movement, belonging, and the enduring relationship between land, language, and identity.
