Maureen Gruben Inuvialuk, b. 1963

Delta Trim employs a moose hide and neon orange safety reflector bands that have been sewn into a large-scale version of Maureen’s mother’s delta trim pattern, and fixed onto aqua-green bubble wrap. Each Inuvialuit seamstress develops her own personal delta trim pattern— generally only about half an inch high—that is used to adorn parkas for both ceremonial and everyday use as protection from the elements. The scale and vibrancy of Maureen’s reiteration here is a stunning assertion of the beauty, intricacy, and flexibility of delta trim as a cultural form, and of the importance of its role in complex and intimate social and familial relationships.
