Corey Bulpitt Haida, b. 1978
243.8 x 61 cm
In keeping with Corey’s trademark use of vibrant colour schemes, Rainbow Pole depicts Blue Mountain Hawk, a supernatural being and crest of the NiKun Raven clan, to which Corey belongs, wearing rainbow attire. Masterfully carved in red cedar, Corey spent months working on the pole in keeping with the tradition of the medium, using the tools and techniques learned from his mentors while maintaining his signature aesthetic. Pride and acceptance are central to Corey’s practice. Much like his iconic Granville Street Bridge mural, the symbolism of the rainbow connotes both a Haida story, as well as LGBTQ2S+ and Indigenous pride.
