Star Web is made from some of the fabrics that were stained from the first year of Emile’s life (he is the artist's first baby). Mostly made of discarded bibs, the pattern is a merging of the 8-pointed star found on Cree star blankets and a spider's web. Building on previous works that explore the star cluster Pakone Kisîk as the hole in the sky, which is where life comes from, the artist is exploring the overlaps of spider, stars, and the domesticities of new motherhood.
The fabric is transformed from a bib to a marker of time and life through its staining and repurposing. Using the artist's hair for the webbing connects baby to mother and highlights the strength that is required for parenting. The smiley face at the center of the web represents the welcoming of a life through the hole in the sky (the stars), which is metaphorically entwined in this work through the story of Pakone Kisîk and through the reference of the star blanket.
