In the world of contemporary art, humor is often a powerful tool for deconstructing stereotypes and illuminating absurdities—especially when it comes to the persistence of reductive cultural narratives. Three Piece Dinner flips the script on these stereotypes, inviting viewers to confront the bizarre ways in which seemingly benign symbols are twisted into slurs. Through the lens of humor and identity, this exhibition celebrates the rich, multifaceted cultures of Indigenous peoples while addressing the strange—and often offensive—ways in which identities and traditions are reduced to caricatures.

At the heart of this exhibition is the playful, yet profound, use of "KFC"—a fast-food icon often tied to a longstanding stereotype of "Indigenous people like fried chicken." The “joke” becomes the catalyst for a deeper exploration of the connections between culture, food, and identity. The three Indigenous artists featured here embrace KFC as a symbol of comfort, home, and the personal joy that comes from reclaiming what others have tried to reduce to a joke.

Each artist in this exhibition uses their love for KFC not as a punchline, but as a celebration of the intersection between modern Indigenous identity and the everyday joys that bring people together—family dinners, shared meals, and the things that make us feel at home. For them, KFC is more than just fried chicken; it’s a marker of belonging, a moment of laughter, and an opportunity to broaden narratives.
