Beau Dick at Independent New York
Works of the late Kwakwaka'wakw artist Beau Dick will be featured at the 15th Independent Art Fair in New York from May 9 to 12.
Featuring artists and galleries who have made an impact on Independent's history, Anniversary Exhibition 15X15: Independent 2010-2024 includes works from 15 artists and is co-curated by the fair's founder, Elizabeth Dee, and Matthew Higgs. Vancouver's Fazakas Gallery will exhibit three of Dick's crafted masks as part of the featured pieces.
Born in B.C., Dick originated from a long line of carvers. He was known for his masks and for advocating for Indigenous rights. His works have been in exhibitions around the globe, including the 17th Biennale of Sydney in Australia, White Columns in New York and Canada House in London, U.K. He was also a recipient of a 2012 VIVA Award, presented by the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation.
